this is me
My name is Jason "Journeyman" Wise. I'm a Certified California Naturalist, environmental educator, conservationist, trail guide, photographer, LGBTQ activist, and writer, with a masters degree (MPP) in environmental policy. I believe access to and education around nature creates environmental advocates. I write and teach about mindfulness, nature, balance, travel, adaptation, stress, joy, being, and relationships--some of the most important ingredients for a good life.
Some of my influences/heroes: John Muir, Rachel Carson, Jane Goodall, Aldo Leopold, Haruki Murakami, Pema Chodron, the Dalai Lama, Leo Babauta, and both Barack and Michelle.

When you stumble upon that moment on a hike where the leaves rustle, the sun dapple hits your eye, life makes sense, and you're at peace, in the now. I'm pretty much always on a journey looking for that moment. Not just in nature, but in all parts of life. It's there, in everything, it's just not always so easy for us to see. There are too many distractions and shiny objects to pull our attention. My goal is to find it, revel in it, and then bring it to show and tell with you on the trail and here on this page. It’s a lofty goal, I’m aware, and one I fail at constantly. But I will keep at it, because that’s what makes the journey worth it.

I work on conservation policy issues as a volunteer with the Sierra Club Angeles Chapter Central Group, representing central LA County (West Hollywood to NELA, Griffith Park to Gateway Cities). I also work with the nonprofits Friends of the Los Angeles River (FoLAR), EnrichLA, and USAL Projects.
