Auld Lang Syne
12/31/2014
The title of the song loosely translates to "old time gone." I always thought the opening line was odd: "should old acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind?" Are you suggesting I end my oldest friendships and pretend they never existed? But the question being asked is rhetorical. The answer to it is no, no you shouldn't forget your true friends. You never should. That question, and indeed the entire song, is a call to mindfulness. It asks you to take a moment as the year is ending to reflect on what is most important to you, on who is most important to you. To remember the challenging times of the past year, we've all had them to varying degrees, but also to remember the love and friendship that made those times a little easier, we've all had those to varying degrees as well. Thank you to all my friends, nay family, who've been there for me in 2014, in good times and bad. You know who you are. I love you. Let's grow auld together. |
